The service extension granted to the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), C.D. Wickremeratne is scheduled to end today (09).
The current IGP, C.D. Wickramaratne, was initially supposed to retire from the police service on March 26, 2023, however, President Ranil Wickremesinghe extended his tenure by three months until June 26 by way of a special gazette notification dated April 06, which was then further extended for an additional 3 months which concludes today.
However, a final decision on whether to appoint a new IGP or to grant current IGP Wickremeratne with another service extension will reportedly be announced today.
It is speculated that in view of the current situation, Wickramaratne will continue to work in the same position with a service extension.
It is also reported that several parties have informed the President that there is a risk of some dissension within the Sri Lanka Police if a new IGP is appointed.
