IMF spl. staff assistance for SOE restructuring

The State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya yesterday (5) said that the restructuring of State owned enterprises (SOEs) is being carried out under the special staff assistance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking to the media yesterday, he also said that the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies has appointed a committee of economic experts to look into the restructuring process of SOEs. “The Ministry has appointed a committee with experts who have vast experience in engaging with such cases. That special committee will study SOEs, taking them separately, and will look into how we can restructure these public enterprises in a way that the Government gets a huge profit,” he said. He also noted that the restructuring process of the public enterprises will be done more transparently than ever before. “Due to appointing such a committee, transparency is preserved. In addition, the political interferences that occur in this process are also limited. Also, we are carrying out a restructuring process in such a way that the Government gets the maximum benefit. For this, we get the support of the IMF staff too. Therefore, there is nothing to be worried about,” he noted.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers’ approval had also been granted recently for the divestiture of several SOEs including SriLankan Airlines Limited., SriLankan Catering Ltd., Sri Lanka Telecom PLC, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd., Canwill Holdings Private Ltd. (Grand Hyatt Colombo), Hotel Developers Lanka Ltd. (Hilton Hotel Colombo), Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. including the Litro Gas Terminals (Private) Ltd. and the Lanka Hospital Corporation PLC.
