SJB Weligama organiser Rehan Jayawickreme has initiated court proceedings against NPP MP Asitha Niroshan in regards to a defamatory statement made on mainstream media, the NewsdeskSL learns.
Earlier this year, Jayawickreme had sent MP Niroshan a letter of demand for statements made on a television program accusing Jayawickreme of having dealings with underworld figures.
When contacted by The NewsdeskSL, MP Niroshan vehemently denied all such statements, adding that he wasn’t referring to Jayawickreme, instead he had only mentioned that Rehan Jayawickreme and his party had nominated a drug peddler to the Weligama PS Chairman post.
The Letter of Demand sent by Jayawickreme’s lawyers, Neethika Partners, demanded for a formal retraction of the false statement, adding that if this was not done, a sum of RS 500 million was to be paid as damages.
Despite demanding a formal retraction of the statement made on television within 14 days, it has been almost 5 months to date, and MP Niroshan has remained silent on the matter.
