No more UPMA or PAMA as original Puma files lawsuit against Lankan sellers

*Several sellers have been banned from selling counterfeit products bearing the Puma or similar logo products

*Products with the Puma logo, yet spelt as ‘Upma’, ‘Pama’ or ‘Pume’ found at retail outlets have been served with court order preventing the sale of such items.

Global sportswear brand Puma SE has obtained four enjoining orders from the Commercial High Court of Colombo preventing several entities from selling counterfeit products bearing its registered trademarks.

The civil action was filed under the Intellectual Property Act No. 36 of 2003 and accused the defendants of unlawfully offering footwear using the “Puma” name and the company’s leaping cat logo.

Puma argued that the counterfeit products were of inferior quality, misleading consumers and damaging the company’s brand reputation.

The court orders prohibit the defendants from producing, importing, distributing, marketing, or selling any goods that are identical to, or likely to be confused with, Puma’s registered marks.

Further legal proceedings are expected to continue.
