Ranil’s arrest was to gain applause from the gallery: Rauff Hakeem

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s arrest was made clearly to gain applause from the gallery, said Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem.

He made this statement a short while ago while speaking at a media briefing today (24).

“This is how we see it based on statements made by certain individuals prior to the arrest of Ranil. It could have been done in a different manner,” he said.

Hakeem went on to state that facts should have been reported to the Magistrate’s Court through a B report after an investigation and statements taken from all parties involved.

“The Magistrate then should summon the former President rather than treat him like a common criminal. This was designed to humiliate him. We are against that,” Hakeem emphasized.

He further noted that he isn’t against the due process of law.

“This was a clear attempt by the government to show their bravado, but have done it in a wrong manner,” he added.
