In response to the Government’s decision to deport 11 Indian nationals for illegal business ownerships, the SJB’s Weligama Chief Organiser Rehan Jayawickreme, has questioned the government for not taking action against Israeli nationals who are operating illegal business in the Weligama area.
“If 11 Indians can be deported for illegal business activities, why can’t the authorities touch the illegal operations run by Israelis here? Are they above the law?”, Jayawickreme said in a X post today.
He further went on to mention that the Indian Government had been very supportive towards Sri Lanka and should ideally question these decisions.
“IndiainSL you should ask the Government through diplomatic channels if only your nationals are expected to uphold the law while Israeli nationals are treated as if they are above it. After all, you have helped us far more than these illegal settlers ever have,” he noted.
Additionally, Jayawickreme mentioned that he has requested the Weligama PS Chairman for a full list of all Israeli-run businesses in Weligama and Mirissa.
“If the government will not act, we will take it to court. I will put my own money behind the case if I have to,’ Jayawickreme concluded.
The Newsdesk learns that many of the Israeli settlers in the Weligama area have been exposed to violence and suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and have been creating havoc within the locals in the area.
