NPP MP Asitha Niroshana has made baseless accusations against me. If his remarks were limited to political ideology or even twisting something I had said, I would have taken it with a pinch of salt. But this was different. The NPP MP has, shamelessly and irresponsibly, tried to portray to the public that my politics is backed by drug money,” said SJB Weligama Organizer Rehan Jayawickrama.
Jayawickrama spoke exclusively to The Newsdesk SL today (10), after initiating legal action against Kaduwela NPP-nominated MP Asitha Niroshana.
“Criticism of my political stance, ideology or policies is fair game. But personal attacks, especially baseless allegations linking me to drugs and the underworld, cross a serious line,” Jayawickrama told The Newsdesk SL.
He stressed that these claims relate to highly illegal activity in Sri Lanka and that Niroshana’s statements are a clear attempt to damage his reputation.
“Through my lawyers, I have issued a very specific letter of demand. I do not want an apology. I do not want a retraction. He has 14 days to respond. If not, I will be initiating legal action. These are serious and false accusations, and people like me have families and children to protect,” he added.
“He should know that if he has made claims like this without evidence, he will have to prove them in court now,” Jayawickrama concluded.
Meanwhile, The Newsdesk SL contacted NPP MP Asitha Niroshana who vehemently denied the allegations and even went on to state that though he said Rehan’s name and mentioned Weligama organizer, he was not implying anything to Rehan, yet what he implied was that Rehan and the SJB is now ‘helpless’ after nominating an individual for the Weligama Urban Council who is a drug peddler.
