The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has begun signing a no-confidence motion against Speaker Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala, accusing him of misleading the public and government by falsely claiming to hold a doctorate. The SJB alleges that the Speaker has claimed to have a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and a doctorate from Waseda University in Japan at various points, including during the 2024 parliamentary election campaign.
He reportedly used the title “Dr.” alongside his name, prompting public scrutiny. The motion points to violations of the Parliamentary Code of Conduct and claims that he has undermined public trust in Parliament and other key state institutions. Notable signatories of the motion include SJB leader Sajith Premadasa and several other prominent MPs.
