Private importers have started releasing stocks of rice into the market, with the initial consignment arriving in the country on the 11th and swiftly cleared by Customs. The recent approval by the Cabinet of Ministers to allow rice imports without control permits until December 20, 2024, aims to address the shortage of various rice varieties in local markets. Approximately 75,000 kg of rice was reported to have been cleared through customs yesterday, primarily consisting of Samba and White Raw rice imported from India.
The Essential Food Commodities Importers & Traders Association anticipates additional rice shipments arriving on the 12th and 13th. Lanka Sathosa Chairman Dr. Samitha Perera reassured the public that the rice shortage will be alleviated with the influx of imported rice. Dr. Perera conveyed this message during a recent appearance on “TV Derana.” Entrepreneur Chandralal Gunasekera, another participant on the program, emphasized the challenges faced in supplying rice to his shops due to the ongoing shortage.
