Deep Depression Over Bay of Bengal Affects Sri Lanka’s Weather

The Meteorology Department reported that a deep depression situated approximately 240 km northeast of Trincomalee and 290 km east of Kankasanthurai was monitored on the night of November 28, 2024. This system is projected to move northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coast, with its impact on Sri Lanka’s weather expected to diminish following November 29.

Showers and thundershowers are anticipated in the Northern and North-central provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district. The Northern province could experience heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm in certain areas. Additionally, intermittent showers are forecasted for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, along with Galle, Matara, Matale, and Kandy districts.

The Met Department has indicated that various regions across the island may witness showers or thundershowers during the evening or night. Wind gusts reaching 60 km/h may occur in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Eastern, Central, and Southern provinces. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate potential damages from localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
