Cyclonic Storm Approaching Sri Lanka: Meteorology Department Issues Warning

The Meteorology Department has reported that a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was positioned approximately 190 km southeast of Trincomalee as of 11:30 p.m. on November 26, 2024. The system is expected to move north-northwestward, drawing closer to Sri Lanka’s east coast and likely intensifying into a cyclonic storm today, November 27.

As a result of this weather system, cloudy conditions are anticipated across most of the island. The Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western, and Central provinces should brace for very heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds. Showers and thundershowers are forecasted intermittently in the Northern, North-central, Central, Western, and North-western provinces, as well as in the districts of Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Kegalle, with some areas receiving over 150 mm of rain.

Elsewhere on the island, lighter showers are also expected, with potential rainfall exceeding 75 mm in certain locations. Winds may reach speeds of 40-50 km/h across several provinces. The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
