Historic Opening of the Tenth Parliament

The ceremonial opening of the tenth Parliament today marks a significant moment in history, being distinct after over fifty years. This session will welcome 160 new Members of Parliament (MPs), many of whom will be entering the House for the first time. Notably, this Parliament also boasts the highest number of female MPs, with 22 women taking their seats.

In a break from tradition, the ceremony will forgo military honors, gun salutes, and the recital of Jaya Mangala Gatha, following directives from the President. This shift signifies an evolution in Sri Lankan parliamentary customs, which have been adapting since the constitution was amended in 1978. Interestingly, while there was an adjournment debate on a policy statement made by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2020, it did not culminate in a vote.

The session will commence at 10:00 a.m., with the Secretary-General of Parliament presenting the Extraordinary Gazette Notifications. The election of the Speaker and subsequent oaths will follow, allowing MPs to choose their seats freely—a unique aspect of this session. Distinguished guests, including foreign diplomats, have been invited, with electronic invitations sent for the first time.
