President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government has expressed its commitment to working closely with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to facilitate Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. On the 18th, Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer and the IMF delegation met with President Dissanayake and key ministers at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss the future of the IMF program.
The IMF representatives congratulated the new administration on its electoral success and conveyed optimism about the partnership. In response, President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of restoring public trust in governance, noting that the success of the IMF initiatives relies heavily on this trust.
The President highlighted his government’s dedication to meeting the citizens’ urgent needs and urged the IMF to adopt a balanced approach that acknowledges the challenges faced by the populace. He assured that social spending would be prioritized, particularly in areas like child poverty and support for individuals with disabilities. The IMF delegation pointed out previous underutilization of social funding, prompting the President to commit to more effective resource management.
Discussions also revolved around governance and anti-corruption measures, with President Dissanayake affirming a strong stance against corruption and a commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability within the government.
