Viral Dumpling Quest Leads to Cyclist Gridlock in Central China

What began as a social media quest for breakfast dumplings spiraled into a chaotic scene as thousands of cyclists caused traffic gridlock between Zhengzhou and Kaifeng in central China. Initially intended to boost Kaifeng’s economy, the trend took off when tens of thousands of cyclists, many on rented bikes, rode through the night, overwhelming a six-lane expressway.

Police attempted to manage the situation, using loudspeakers to urge cyclists to disperse while bike rental companies warned that they would remotely lock bikes taken outside Zhengzhou. This phenomenon reflects a growing trend among young Chinese seeking affordable travel options amidst a struggling economy and limited job prospects.

The journey originated with four university students who cycled 50 km (30 miles) to try guantangbao, a popular soup dumpling. Their spontaneous adventure resonated with many in the city of 12.6 million, who are increasingly feeling the pressures of a competitive job market. State media initially celebrated the trend as a sign of youthful passion, while local officials sought to capitalize on the excitement, offering discounts and organizing events for college students. However, the resulting chaos showcased the challenges of managing such a viral movement.
