Colombo records highest rainfall in last 24 hours

The Department of Meteorology reports that the Colombo District experienced the highest rainfall from 8:30 a.m. on Sunday (6) to 7:00 a.m. today (7), at 162.5 mm.

Additionally, significant rainfall was recorded in the Kalutara District, with Walallavita receiving 112.5 mm and Horana 111.5 mm. In Galle District, Neluwa saw 109.5 mm, while Kalubovitiyana in Matara District recorded 84.0 mm.

This morning, the department issued a heavy rain advisory, warning that the current rainy conditions are expected to persist in the southwestern region of the island. This is due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from both hemispheres converge, influencing the weather.

Showers or thundershowers are anticipated in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in certain areas.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimise potential damage from localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
