Senior officials have indicated that a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is scheduled to be enforced “in the coming hours” along the Israel-Lebanon border.
This development follows a joint appeal by Britain, the United States, and other allies yesterday (25th September) for an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for negotiations amidst the escalating conflict. So far, over 600 people have been killed in Lebanon in recent days.
The ceasefire is anticipated to prevent a potential Israeli ground operation in Lebanon, a move that has sparked global concern.
A US administration representative said, “The ceasefire will be for 21 days along the blue line (demarcation line dividing Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights). During those 21 days, the parties will negotiate towards a potential resolution of the conflict that has been ongoing since Hezbollah launched the attack on October 8, and to reach a comprehensive agreement along the blue line that allows for residents to return to their home in both Lebanon and Israel.”
The ceasefire is expected to be put in place along the northern border only and would not extend to Gaza.
