In Brooklyn, community leaders are urging the New York City Police Department to suspend the officers who opened fire at a suspect aboard a subway train on Sunday.
The incident resulted in injuries to four individuals, including one officer and two innocent bystanders. According to police reports, the situation escalated when Derell Mickells, 38, evaded the fare at the Sutter Avenue station and disregarded repeated commands to halt, with the officers’ attempts to use Tasers proving ineffective. The NYPD states that Mickells brandished a knife and advanced towards one of the officers.
In response, one officer discharged six rounds while the other fired three. Mickells, as well as one officer, a 49-year-old male bystander, and a 26-year-old female bystander, sustained injuries.
Mickells, who sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen, is facing multiple charges, including attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He remains in critical condition.
