Vietnam death toll rises to 197 as typhoon triggers flash floods and landslides

According to state media reports, nearly 200 individuals have lost their lives in Vietnam following Typhoon Yagi, with 128 individuals reported missing due to the devastating impact of flash floods and landslides.

Vietnam’s VNExpress newspaper disclosed that 199 fatalities have been recorded, alongside over 800 individuals sustaining injuries.

While flood waters from the Red River have slightly receded in the capital, numerous areas remain submerged, with water levels reaching neck-high in certain locations.

In Hanoi’s Tay Ho district, residents navigated through murky brown water above knee level along a street, some still equipped with bicycle and motorcycle helmets after abandoning their vehicles en route.

A few individuals utilized small boats to traverse the flooded road, while debris such as empty water bottles and a styrofoam cooler drifted past. Notably, one individual pushed his motorbike towards drier land in an aluminum sloop.

Experts attribute the intensity of storms like Typhoon Yagi to climate change, pointing out that warmer ocean temperatures provide additional energy to bolster these storms, resulting in heightened wind speeds and increased precipitation.
