The Convener of the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF), Madushan Chandrajith, and several other demonstrators were arrested this afternoon near the Fort Railway Station during a protest march in Colombo.
The rally was against government policies affecting higher education and the rising cost of living.
Upon reaching the protest site, an Election Commission representative told the demonstrators that protests or marches were prohibited during the election period.
Disregarding the official’s directive to disband, the protesters proceeded to organize their protest march, and the police detained the Convenor of the IUSF for non-compliance.
During the dispersal of the demonstration, additional protesters were apprehended by the authorities.
