Train collisions kills six wild elephants

Two separate train collisions along the Batticaloa line yesterday (27) have left six wild elephants dead.

According to police, the night mail train plying from Colombo to Kankasanthurai near Galgamuwa had killed four elephants around midnight yesterday.

At around 12:30 this morning, a female tusker and an elephant calf had collided with the ‘Meenagaya’ train en route from Batticaloa to Colombo in the Palugaswewa area of Habarana, as stated in police reports.

Police have stated that the calf had died on impact, whilst the female passed away this afternoon (28) due to sustained injuries.

Galgamuwa and Ritigala Wildlife Offices officials are conducting further investigations regarding the incidents.
