Sri Lanka is taking preventative measures in attempts to prevent online sexual harassment.
Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alas has reportedly presented a circular to the Cabinet of Ministers today (18), in a memorandum pertaining to the proposed bill and its relating laws.
The new legislation aims to put an end to the non-consensual and malicious distribution of media of ex-partners through social media.
Accordingly, there is set to be an imposition of severe laws targeting individuals who share intimate photos and videos of others on social media without consent
First time offenders will face a maximum 5 year year prison sentence, as well as a fine not exceeding Rs. 500,000.
A repeat offender will face a 10 year jail sentence along with a maximum fine of Rs. 1 million.
