What’s happening to the Jerome Fernando Money Laundering case?

The Fundamental Rights Petition filed by religious leaders against self- proclaimed ‘Prophet’ Jerome Fernando has been postponed to the 22nd July 2024, after it was called today (10) at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.

The petition was filed at the Supreme Court requesting an order from the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police to arrest Fernando, who is said to have made insulting remarks against other religions, including Buddhism, and prosecute him under the United Nations Convention on Civil and Political Rights Act.

Mr. Sanjeewa Jayawardena PC, who appeared for the petitioners, while giving evidence before the court said that three of the religious leaders who submitted the petition have informed that they are ready to withdraw the petition, while the other three petitioners have not changed thwir stance on the petition.

The Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, who appeared for the Attorney General, gave evidence before the court and said that according to the earlier order of the court, all the reports of the investigations has been conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act regarding Fernando and thus all reports have been filed before the court.

Accordingly, The three-judge bench considered the facts and concluded that since the relevant petition had been considered before the Chief Justice, it was only appropriate to call the case once again before a bench consisting of the Chief Justice.
