Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya (Retd) has assumed the position of the Chief of National Intelligence, as announced by the Ministry of Defence. He received his official appointment letter from Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) on the preceding day and has already commenced his duties at the Defence Ministry in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.
An accomplished alumnus of Ananda College, Colombo, the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, and the Officers Training School in Pakistan, Major Gen. Wanigasooriya has an extensive military background, having served in various command, staff, and instructional roles. Notable highlights of his career include commanding brigades during the Humanitarian Operations in Northern Sri Lanka, contributing to the training of military personnel post-conflict, and playing significant roles in institutions like the Kotelawala Defence University and the Defence Services Command and Staff College.
With academic credentials including a Master’s Degree in Military Arts and Sciences from the United States Army Command and General Staff College and a Master’s Degree in Management Studies from Kotelawala Defence University, Major Gen. Wanigasooriya has also specialized in Strategic Studies at Indonesia’s National Resilience Institute. His impactful career spans representation at UNHRC sessions, contributions to major defense events, and key roles in establishing military development centers and logistics schools for the Sri Lanka Army.
