Three people were killed in the Dutch city of Rotterdam on Thursday (28) after a gunman opened fire in a local woman’s home, killing both her and her daughter. The shooter then stormed into a classroom of Rotterdam’s university hospital and opened fire on a male teacher.
According to police, the suspect is a 32-year-old university student who shot a 39-year-old woman who lived in his neighbourhood. He also opened fire on her 14-year-old daughter who succumbed to injuries later in hospital.
The gunman then went to the Rotterdam Medical Centre university hospital, entering a classroom and shooting a 43-year old teacher.
The suspect was arrested near the hospital with unknown motives. “We have been shocked by a horrible incident. Shots were fired in two different places in the city. Many people witnessed it,” Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said. “Emotions in the city are very high. My condolences go out to the victims.”
According to Rotterdam’s chief prosecutor Hugo Hillenaar, the suspect was known to law enforcement, being prosecuted and convicted for animal abuse in 2021.
