- Can support good moves of the Govt. from Opposition: Attanayake
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday (2) denied reports that its members, parliamentarians Dr. Harsha de Silva, Kabir Hashim, and Eran Wickremaratne are ready to join the Government in the near future.
The SJB claimed that the reports are completely false and fabricated.
When The Daily Morning contacted SJB Chief Organiser, MP Tissa Attanayake yesterday (2), he said that those Parliamentarians whose names are mentioned in the reports would never cross the floor leaving SJB.
He further mentioned that it is not necessary to be in the Government to support the good decisions taken by the Government and the SJB is continuing to do so.
“We don’t have a policy that opposes everything the Government does. At this critical time, all of us, including the MPs mentioned above, are doing policy-based politics beyond traditional party politics. Some parties who are looking at our moves think that we will join the Government. There is no such thing. At the same time, we criticise the Government for its misdeeds. That’s why there is no truth in what the media is saying,” he said.
He also said that if there are good policies from the Government’s end, they would not hesitate to support them to implement those policies. Being a member of the opposition is not an obstacle to look at optimistically. He noted that SJB and the President are in the same position in matters such as getting support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“We notice very often so much fake news like these. Such news has been reported before. It has been said since the President Ranil Wickremasinghe assumed duties as the Prime Minister last year. But except for the first two SJB MPs who crossed the floor, no one has gone so far. It will be the same in the future,” he said.
Dr. de Silva is serving as the Treasurer of SJB while Hashim and Wickremaratne are serving as Senior Deputy Chairman and Secretary of Research and Development respectively.
