Over 17 million Sri Lankans are set to vote in the country’s tenth Parliament election, following Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent presidential victory. This snap election, called by the newly elected president, aims to break the political deadlock, particularly for the National People’s Power (NPP) party, which currently holds a mere three seats in Parliament.
A total of 17,140,354 citizens are eligible to participate, with the Gampaha District leading in registered voters at 1,881,129. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the election day, requiring voters to present one of nine accepted forms of identification.
Notably, this election will mark a change in the voting process: the left index finger will be marked instead of the little finger to prevent confusion and ensure transparency. Voters can express their preferences for candidates by placing an ‘x’ next to their chosen party or independent group, adhering to strict guidelines to ensure ballot validity.
With 225 parliamentary seats up for grabs, including 196 through public vote, the election is anticipated to redefine Sri Lanka’s political landscape. The inaugural session of the new Parliament is scheduled for November 21.
