On November 4, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the introduction of a Women’s Champions Trophy as part of the Women’s Future Tour Programme (FTP) for 2025-29. The inaugural tournament is set to be held in Sri Lanka during June-July 2027. The ICC aims to host one global women’s tournament each year to enhance the visibility of women’s cricket.
The Champions Trophy’s addition means that there will be three major women’s tournaments within a span of 12 months, including the T20 World Cup in September 2028 and the Los Angeles Olympics in August 2028. In total, five global events for women are scheduled over the next five years, featuring T20 World Cups in 2026 and 2028, alongside ODI World Cups in 2025 and 2029.
Recently, New Zealand triumphed in the T20 World Cup held in the UAE, defeating South Africa in the final. India is set to host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year.
During the 2025-29 cycle, 15 Women’s Tests will occur. In 2026, India will play three Tests against Australia, England, and South Africa. The West Indies will return to Test cricket after a long hiatus, facing Australia, England, and South Africa in subsequent years. The ICC has also added Zimbabwe to the Women’s ODI Championship, raising the number of participating teams to 11.
