Sri Lankan Navy Celebrates 74 Years of Service

The Sri Lanka Navy proudly commemorates its 74th Anniversary on September 9, showcasing its rich maritime history and unwavering dedication to national defense. Under the leadership of Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Navy has organized numerous programs across its commands that reflect its enduring traditions and religious practices.

In honor of this milestone, 2,138 sailors have been promoted, marking a significant achievement within the ranks. These advancements span various positions, from Ordinary Seaman to Master Chief Petty Officer, exemplifying the Navy’s commitment to developing its personnel.

The Navy’s genesis dates back to the Naval Volunteer Force in 1937, evolving into the Royal Ceylon Navy in 1950 and eventually becoming the Sri Lanka Navy in 1972. Over the decades, it has transformed from a ceremonial force to a pivotal military entity, particularly during the fight against terrorism.

Currently, the Navy plays a crucial role in maritime security, combating drug trafficking and illegal activities. It will also command the Combined Task Force 154 in January 2025, enhancing its global stature. Religious ceremonies, community outreach, and blood donation campaigns further underscore the Navy’s commitment to service and support for its personnel and their families.
