In a decisive operation, the Sri Lanka Navy has intercepted an Indian fishing boat with 18 fishermen aboard for illegal fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters. The apprehension occurred off Veththalakerni in Jaffna yesterday, as part of ongoing efforts to combat unauthorized fishing practices. The vessel was found approximately 30 nautical miles beyond the International Maritime Boundary Line, highlighting the extent of the violation.
The Northern Naval Command had deployed Fast Attack Craft to address the sighting of multiple Indian fishing boats engaged in illegal activities in the area. This proactive measure led to the successful seizure of one boat and the arrest of its crew. Following the operation, the seized boat and fishermen were escorted to Kankesanthurai Harbour, where they were handed over to the Regional Director of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Northern Region for further legal proceedings.
This incident adds to a growing tally for 2024, bringing the total to 66 Indian fishing boats seized and 515 Indian fishermen arrested for poaching within Sri Lankan waters. The Navy continues to strengthen its patrols to safeguard national maritime resources.
