Sri Lanka liberalises access to medical education

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the establishment of three Private Medical Colleges (PMC) in Sri Lanka, according to Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

Rambukwella highlighted that the PMCs will maintain the same standards as existing medical colleges.

He added that the PMCs will provide more opportunities for students to pursue medical education within Sri Lanka.

Rambukwella noted that Professors who have worked as consultants in existing medical colleges have outlined minimum qualifications, and PMCs are expected to meet or exceed these standards.

Accordingly, three hospitals have been integrated into these PMCs.

Rambukwella added that the PMCs are encouraged to allocate scholarships to 10 percent of their students to assist qualified students facing financial barriers to accessing medical education.
