Sri Lanka Launches 200 Cigarette-Free Zones

The Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) Association has unveiled a significant initiative to establish 200 cigarette-free zones throughout Sri Lanka, aimed at fostering a smoke-free environment. Public Health Inspector Sandun Ratnayake shared details with the media, emphasizing that these designated areas will completely ban the sale and consumption of cigarettes. Informative notices have been posted to educate the public on the dangers of smoking and promote awareness.

Ratnayake acknowledged the collaborative efforts behind the initiative, highlighting the support from clergy, volunteer groups, NGOs, teachers, and school principals. The PHIs Association has ambitious plans to expand this initiative further, with the ultimate vision of transforming Sri Lanka into a smoke-free nation.

With smoking-related illnesses claiming around 20,000 lives each year in Sri Lanka, the urgency for these measures is more critical than ever.
