Ratnapura District Faces Surge in Rat Fever Cases

A total of 1,882 leptospirosis cases, commonly known as rat fever, have been recorded in the Ratnapura District, resulting in the highest number of fatalities from the disease this year. Dr. Kapila Kannangara, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Health Services Director, warned about the seriousness of untreated rat fever, stating, “if rat fever is not properly treated, it can lead to organ failure in the kidneys, heart and brain and may even result in death.”

High-risk areas within the Ratnapura District include Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, Elapatha, Pelmadulla, Opanayake, Nivithigala, Kalawana, and Kalthota. The outbreak has already claimed 22 lives. Health authorities recommend Doxycycline as a preventive measure against rat fever, which can be obtained from regional health service officers or Public Health Inspectors at least a week before engaging in fieldwork.

The situation is alarming, especially considering that there were only 1,400 cases reported in 2023, indicating a significant increase in 2024. Prompt action and awareness are crucial to prevent further spread of this dangerous disease.
