Minister Vijitha Herath’s statements about the bond scam legal proceedings have been deemed inaccurate by Dhanushka Ramanayake, former President’s Media Director General.
On October 1, Herath claimed that legal actions were stalled due to presidential immunity held by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Ramanayake countered that these remarks were misleading.
Wickremesinghe established a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the February 27, 2015, bond issuance, and a Presidential Commission also examined the case. The Commission cleared Wickremesinghe and confirmed no loss to the government.
The Attorney General indicted ten individuals, but a High Court acquitted them. An appeal to the Supreme Court is pending for January 2025.
Ramanayake emphasised that Wickremesinghe is neither a witness nor a defendant, making immunity claims unnecessary, criticising Herath for making such statements.
