A doberman puppy who was shipped across the island from Point Pedro to Colombo has died during the shipment process.
Further to a Facebook post by Animals Rights Activist Shilpa Samaratunge today (01) it has been revealed that a ‘popular’ dog breeder had packed the puppy in a sealed box and had transported the puppy from Point Pedro to Colombo, where the puppy had been dehydrated and suffocated during the 7 hour trip.
“All the information we had, the breeders information, and the pictures were all given to the police station when I made the entry. We now know the case will be put to courts, but we need more notice to be taken. Sri Lanka has NO regulations with regard to breeding, no licenses, and no policies. So many companion animals die simply because someone wants to make more profit,” said Samaratunge in her post.
She further noted that the judiciary needs to act in accordance with the law in protecting the rights of all animals and implement the maximum possible penalty to those found guilty of violating the rights of innocent animals.
