Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya has been officially appointed as the President’s Senior Advisor on Science and Technology. This significant announcement was made today (22) at the Presidential Secretariat, where Dr. Nandaka Sanath Kumanayake, the Secretary to the President, presented the appointment letter.
Currently affiliated with the University of Houston and the MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in the United States, Professor Udugamasooriya brings a wealth of expertise to this role. An alumnus of D.S. Senanayake College in Colombo, he holds a specialized degree in Chemistry from the University of Colombo. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Michigan, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Professor Udugamasooriya is also a holder of several patents, showcasing his contributions to scientific innovation. His decision to leave a prominent position in U.S. public service to accept this honorary advisory role marks a significant milestone in his career and highlights his commitment to advancing science and technology in his home country.
