Prez releases Rs 11 Bn to fund General Election

Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, disclosed yesterday that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has allocated Rs 11 billion for the upcoming general elections on November 14th. The final day for nominations is set for October 4, 2024.

Ratnayake mentioned that the President had authorised the release of the specified amount, envisaged to cover the total expenses of the election. This announcement was made to the press before a meeting centred on early arrangements for the forthcoming General Election.

Two gatherings concerning preliminary arrangements for the parliamentary elections were convened at the Election Commission Office in Rajagiriya on the same day. The initial meeting included the participation of District Secretaries and Deputy District Secretaries, with the Commissioner General also present. Additionally, another meeting was conducted later in the day involving District Returning Officers, Assistant Commissioners, and Deputy Election Commissioners to further deliberate on election preparations.

The new Parliament is anticipated to convene on November 21 following the general election scheduled for November 14, 2024, with the deadline for nominations set for October 4, 2024.
