- To consider option if talks fail
President and Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies Ranil Wickremesinghe said that while he is hopeful that the issues in the education sector can be expeditiously resolved through discussions, the sector can be declared essential if such talks fail.
However, if the discussions fail, necessary measures will be taken to declare the school education sector an essential service, the Head of State noted while addressing an event yesterday (23) at the Sri Sangamiththa Balika Vidyalaya in Colombo to distribute free textbooks and uniform materials to school children.
Speaking further, the President assured that he would not permit any group to hold school children hostage for their own benefit.
