President Ranil Wickremesinghe has declined an invitation from National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake for a one-on-one debate.
Instead, the President proposes that Dissanayake, Sunil Handunnetti, and Harshana Suriyapperuma should engage in a debate to clarify whether their economic policy is oriented towards an export economy or an import economy – a question which he feels has been evaded by other politicians.
Dissanayake had initially challenged President Ranil Wickremesinghe to a direct debate rather than trading allegations against each other on stage. Ready to address any questions from Wickremesinghe, Dissanayake also indicated his intention to question the President. One of the queries Dissanayake highlighted is whether Wickremesinghe’s statement accusing the Rajapaksas of corruption was truthful.
Furthermore, the President mentioned the possibility of arranging a video discussion involving Anura, himself, and the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as previously discussed.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe made these statements during a meeting with intellectuals and business leaders from the Kurunegala District at the Asliya Golden Cassandra Hotel in Kurunegala.
