President Ranil Wickremesinghe, during an “Open Mic Night” youth music event at the outdoor theatre in Diyatha Uyana, Battaramulla held yesterday, shared his vision of a nation devoid of queues and dedicated to fulfilling the aspirations of the youth.
The President was warmly welcomed by the young attendees, who were pleasantly surprised by his presence. Engaging with them in a friendly manner, he sat among them, responding positively to their questions
When asked by a youth about their expectations from the government, a sense of comfort was expressed. In response, the President stressed the importance of a robust government in ensuring youth happiness and pledged to foster a strong economy for their benefit.
Addressing concerns about waiting in long queues, the President assured that under his leadership, youth would only need to queue at the cinema.
While responding to a question said by a youth on Netflix, the president said;”I’ll get Netflix. But why can’t anyone put a Sri Lankan movie on there? Why not something like Squid Game, House of Cards, or even Designated Survivor? I’m considering suggesting Chariots of Fire to the opposition. “
Reflecting on his past experiences, President Wickremesinghe shared insights from his tenure as Minister of Education, where President J.R. Jayewardene cautioned him against jeopardizing the government with proposed reforms. Despite this, Wickremesinghe acknowledged the value of his initiatives.
The President recounted the economic challenges he faced upon taking office two years ago, emphasizing the need to address the country’s economic instability. Measures such as increasing VAT were necessary to stabilize the economy, as advised by the IMF to avoid further deterioration.
The young individuals expressed gratitude for the President’s unexpected visit, appreciating the opportunity to directly discuss their concerns and aspirations with him.
