The Police department yesterday (2) arrested 28 Chinese nationals who had absconded to Sri Lanka after allegedly being involved in an online financial fraud in China.
According to the Police, the arrested suspects include 23 males and five females. A total of five laptops, and several smartphones which were on the suspect’s person have also been taken into custody by the Police for investigation.
The suspects, while in China, had defrauded people of millions for over two months before fleeing to Sri Lanka.
Following an alert by the International Police organisation – Interpol, about the group of scammers, local law enforcement have moved to track and arrest the suspects, who were staying at a tourist resort in Aluthgama.
Police detectives are planning to conduct a lengthy investigation with the assistance of an interpreter of the Embassy of China in Colombo, the police said.
