The National People’s Power (NPP) has achieved a significant milestone by securing a two-thirds majority in Parliament, obtaining 123 seats in the 2024 General Election. This victory was bolstered by their impressive performance in the Gampaha District, where they captured 16 out of the 19 available seats. The NPP garnered a total of 898,759 votes, accounting for 72% of the district’s votes, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) came in second with 150,445 votes, or 12.18%. With this success, the NPP solidified its position, needing only 113 seats in the 225-member Parliament to establish a majority.
So far, the NPP has accumulated a total of 6,842,223 votes, representing 61.73% of the votes counted. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the NPP leader and President, previously called for snap elections following his presidential victory. He emphasized the necessity of a clear majority to fulfill his commitment to combat corruption and restore stability in the wake of the nation’s severe economic crisis. Dissanayake has consistently encouraged the public to grant the NPP the two-thirds majority essential for implementing its ambitious reform agenda. In the previous Parliament, the NPP, led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), held only three seats.
