Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Prasanna Ranatunga says that no candidate from his party will likely compete for presidency in the upcoming election.
Speaking to The Newsdesk Sri Lanka today (15), SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa stated that his candidacy has not been confirmed either and a candidate will only be nominated after the party comes to a mutual agreement on who will be the nominee.
“The SLPP has yet to decide who the Presidential candidate will be from the SLPP for the elections. The party secretary has said the same. As for me, people can state various things on social media mentioning that I will be contesting, and that is their preferences and opinions, but this candidacy is to be decided by the party, after discussing who they feel is the best person from within the party, who can lead,” said Rajapaksa.
The former President’s son further noted that a candidacy is not based on personal wants and needs and it has to be a person who can carry the title forward.
Meanwhile, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has clarified that she has not taken any decision yet to head the leadership board of the Podujana Eksath Peramuna party.
Issuing a statement, Mrs Kumaratunga also pointed out that she has not decided on supporting a candidate in the upcoming presidential election as yet, refuting media reports in this regard.
