Newly Elected MPs to Enjoy Benefits Package

Parliamentary Secretary General Kushani Rohanadeera recently detailed the extensive benefits that newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) will receive. Each MP is entitled to a monthly allowance of Rs. 54,000, which serves as a financial foundation for their legislative duties. Additionally, MPs will receive a daily allowance of Rs. 2,500 for attending Parliament sessions or committee meetings on non-session days, ensuring they are compensated for their time and efforts.

For those MPs who reside more than 40 kilometers from Parliament, housing accommodations will be available at the Madiwela MPs Official Residence Complex, providing a convenient living arrangement. Each MP will also benefit from an annual allocation of stationery and stamps, valued at Rs. 100,000, to support their administrative needs.

In terms of security, each MP will be issued a pistol, although the government has yet to determine if this benefit will extend to current MPs. Furthermore, every newly elected MP will receive the protection of two police officers, ensuring their safety while they fulfill their responsibilities in Parliament. This comprehensive benefits package aims to enhance the effectiveness and security of the legislative process.
