Chinthaka Hewapathirana of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been elected Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha after a vote was held today.
Accordingly, Hewapathirana secured 22 votes in his favour, while 21 votes were cast against him, giving the NPP control of the local council by a slim one-vote majority.
Last year, the former Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara,was shot dead inside the PS office by two armed gunman in broad daylight.
Prior to Wickramakara’s appointment, Rehan Jayawickreme successfully held the fort as the Mayor of Weligama, where the Pradeshiya Sabha was under his watch.
