Justice Murdhu Fernando took her oath as the Acting Chief Justice before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake this morning (October 10), as reported by the President’s Media Division (PMD).
Justice Fernando is the second woman in Sri Lanka’s history to hold the position of Chief Justice, following Shirani Bandaranayake, who served in 2011.
She began her career in the Attorney General’s Department as a state counsel, serving for over 30 years and advancing through the ranks to senior state counsel, deputy solicitor general, additional solicitor general, and senior additional solicitor general.
While serving as additional solicitor general, she was appointed a President’s Counsel.
In March 2018, she was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court by then-President Maithripala Sirisena.
