As a safety precaution against rising water levels, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided to disconnect the power supply from its Matara substation grid.
According to his post on X, Minister of Power & Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said that the power supply to affected areas in Matara would be reconnected shortly after from the grid substations in Deniyaya and Beliatta.
It was added the Sri Lanka Navy boats and personnel have been placed on standby for the evacuation of CEB staff after the completion of the Matara grid shutdown.
The Galle and Matara districts are largely impacted by the prevailing southwest monsoon conditions, bringing heavy rain to many parts of the island.
‘Red’ alerts have been issued for regions in the Galle and Matara districts.
