Jerome Fernando case: Petitioners dissatisfied with investigation as AG takes undertaking

Petitioners who filed a Fundamental Rights petition against self-proclaimed ‘Prophet’ Jerome Fernando has expressed dissatisfaction to the Supreme Court in regards to the investigation carried out by the relevant authorities.

This was conveyed to the court by counsel PC Sanjeeva Jayawardena yesterday (17) when the Attorney General’s Department took an undertaking to accept any further complaints not yet considered, could be forwarded by the petitioners to the Attorney General and these complaints will be reviewed when making a final and independent decision regarding potential action against Pastor Jerome Fernando in connection with alleged hate speech undermining religious harmony in the country.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Sudarshana de Silva, representing the Attorney General, made this undertaking before a three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Janak de Silva, and Mahinda Samayawardena

Therefore, PC Jayawardena would be permitted to forward any additional complaints that have not yet beed recorded, to the Attorney General on behalf of the petitioners.

Thereafter, The Attorney General would consider these complaints for investigation and make a final decision.

Upon agreement by all parties, the Supreme Court proceedings were then terminated, yet PC Jayawardena informed the court that his clients were dissatisfied with the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) investigation into Pastor Jerome’s alleged money laundering activities, and noted that investigations into the allegations have not been done properly.
