Discussions are nearing completion for a $5 billion road-and-rail link between India and Sri Lanka, with India covering the project’s costs, according to Sri Lanka’s environment secretary, Prabath Chandrakeerthi.
This marks the first significant bilateral infrastructure initiative since President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent election, as India seeks to counter Chinese influence. India is Sri Lanka’s largest trade partner, with investments reaching $142 million in 2021.
Chandrakeerthi mentioned plans to establish connectivity between Rameswaram in India and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka to enhance trade. He noted that improved transport will benefit businesses in both countries.
The Sri Lankan government previously proposed a land bridge between Rameswaram and Talaimannar in 2002, but it faced opposition from Tamil Nadu. Talks resumed in 2015, and the decision has now been made to build the link to Trincomalee.
Currently, there is no direct road or rail connection between Sri Lanka and India. The project may involve bridges and underwater tunnels to facilitate shipping. The estimated cost of nearly $5 billion will be fully funded by India, pending environmental clearance.
