Former Police Officers Convicted 19 Years After Incident

Former police officers have been convicted and fined for impersonating officials and threatening residents during a 2005 incident in Kohombagasthalawa, Ampara. The verdict was issued by Ampara Magistrate Lushaka Kumari Dharmakeerthi on Monday (Dec 09).

According to the report, the four accused officers had broken into a house, threatened its residents, and destroyed property while impersonating police from the Bakkiella Police station. Three of the suspects were found guilty on 9 charges and were fined Rs. 1,000 for 6 charges and Rs. 1,500 for 3 charges each. One of the accused had passed away.

The lengthy delay in the case’s resolution highlights the challenges in the justice system, as victims and the public seek timely accountability for such abuses of power by those entrusted to uphold the law.
