Liam Payne, 31, the former singer of One Direction, a British boy band that captured the hearts of fans worldwide, was found dead on Wednesday after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, according to local officials.
According to a statement from Buenos Aires police, Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel located in the fashionable Palermo district of Argentina’s capital, resulting in “extremely serious injuries.” Medics confirmed his death at the scene, as noted in the statement.
Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, informed The Associated Press that Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room.” Police were dispatched to the hotel following an emergency call shortly after 5 p.m. local time, reporting an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
